Good news for anyone who’s ever stared blankly at a character sheet, slowly questioning all their life choices! The new complexity chart for each class is a godsend, particularly for newcomers or those who don’t want to accidentally sign up for a PhD in Mechanics & Maths (looking at you, Wizards). Now, you’ll know straight off the bat if you’re getting yourself into a high-maintenance character or if you can relax, roll dice, and just hit things.


Gone are the days where your background was just an afterthought (“I guess my Fighter was a sailor, but really, who cares?”). Now, your background determines your ability score bonuses, meaning it’s actually worth a good think! Plus, every background comes with a neat feat—so no more awkward, “You’re a sailor, therefore you must be a tavern brawler” nonsense. Let’s be real, sometimes your character spent their off-time knitting sweaters from kraken tentacles, not knocking out teeth in pubs.


Oh, and speaking of species—yep, “races” are out and “species” is in, along with a refreshing move away from stat stereotypes in the Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook 2024. So, your Goliath could be the most eloquent debater in the land, and your Orc? Well, they might just be a poet at heart. Take that, old-school fantasy tropes!


 

Class Changes: The Glow-Up is Real

Now, I know you’re here for the nitty-gritty class changes, so let’s dive in! All 12 classes got a bit of a spit shine, and boy, are they looking good. The most significant changes aim to get you into the action faster—none of that “cool stuff at level 20” nonsense, because we all know most campaigns end when the Bard accidentally seduces a dragon and ruins everything.


Monks, for example, no longer have to deal with “ki” (because who actually understood how that worked anyway?). Instead, they’ve got Focus Points, which sound much more… well, focused. Monks now punch things harder and faster, like an episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender meets a pub brawl. The Way of the Four Elements is now basically “bender mode,” so you can finally live out your fire-bending dreams while knocking enemies into next week. Thank you, Wizards of the Coast, you’ve made us all very happy .


Rangers have also had a massive overhaul—thank the gods. They’ve always been the awkward middle child of D&D, but no longer! Now, they’ve got a clear role as hunter-extraordinaires with their Hunter’s Mark becoming a cornerstone of the class. No more feeling like a Druid-wannabe-Fighter hybrid with identity issues. You can mark, track, and destroy your enemies with the efficiency of an Elf who’s just discovered Amazon Prime .


 

Weapon Mastery: Time to Get Creative with Combat!


Here’s where things get fun for all you hack-and-slash enthusiasts: Weapon Mastery! Remember when you’d swing your sword, miss, and just sigh while waiting for your next turn? Well, now you’ve got options! Depending on your weapon mastery, you could still deal damage on a miss (greatsword mastery: “Graze”), or maybe cleave through a group of goblins with one mighty swing (axe mastery: “Cleave”). It’s small stuff, sure, but it adds some real spice to your battle strategies—and anything that speeds up combat is always a win in my book .


 

Feats for All: The Buffet of Character Customisation

In this edition, feats are everywhere! No longer just a rare treat for the chosen few, they’re now baked into your character’s progression at multiple levels. From 4th to 16th level, you’ll be picking up feats like they’re on sale at a fantasy supermarket. Heck, even your background throws one at you. Want to add a bit more flair to your Fighter? No problem! How about giving your Cleric the ability to throw a punch? Sorted!


Though, let’s not pretend everything’s perfect. The feat system can feel a bit clunky when it comes to its integration with ability score improvements. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher, and newer players might be left scratching their heads like they’ve just been asked to explain the difference between a Sorcerer and a Wizard .


Inclusivity & Art: Time to Shine!


One thing this edition absolutely nails is its commitment to inclusivity. The art now showcases a variety of heroes from all walks of life. It’s bold, vibrant, and unapologetically diverse, with characters of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. It’s like Critical Role met the United Colours of Benetton, and it’s about time D&D reflected the real world in its fantasy one .

Is the new 2024 Player’s Handbook worth it? In a word—yes. Whether you’re a new adventurer looking for your first quest or a grizzled veteran who’s been playing since THAC0 was a thing (RIP), this edition offers something for everyone. The improvements to character creation, class design, and the glorious return of tactical feats make this handbook feel like a true evolution of 5th Edition without upending the entire system.
